Can a belly button piercing affect your health?

Sacral Chakra

I remember someone once saying to me that a piercing in your navel can short circuit your energy and put your chakra out of alignment. After having my navel pierced for almost 10 years, I recently decided to remove it and was curious to find if there are any effects that a belly button piercing may have on your health. Interestingly enough, there are quite a lot of websites urging people not to have them pierced! Here’s why:

Meridian Channels:

In terms of acupuncture, your belly button is right on the meridian channel for the central nervous system. In martial arts, this area is called the ‘hare’ - your main power centre. By focusing on this centre you can channel more strength, and to place a metal piercing here can short circuit this energy.

The belly button also sits on the Conception Vessel Meridian. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), you never pierce this point with an acupuncture needle, it is forbidden. Piercing this area and leaving a metal bar inserted can create an energy obstruction and can cause energy imbalances through the body, which ultimately leads to sickness in the future. TCM believes that it may also cause problems with your reproductive system.

Chakras:

A piercing in your belly button can put your second chakra out of alignment. Your navel is located (not surprisingly) at the navel chakra/sacral chakra or Swadhisthana Chakra. This is the centre of creativity, passion, attention, concentration, intuition and your connection to others. Misalignment of this chakra can result in a loss of motivation and concentration, can make you over or under-emotional, have a fear of change and creates blocks in your creativity. Anything that you do to your body affects the whole. We are made up of an energy system of meridian channels and any disruption to this system leads to dis-ease. If you do decide to remove your piercings, I would recommend visiting an acupuncturist afterwards to rebalance your energy systems and remove any blockages.

      Hi Holly,

I noticed some subtle changes in the months after I removed mine. I have been able to meditate properly (something I’ve always had difficulty with), my focus/motivation has improved, I’ve stopped procrastinating about things and my cycle became more regular too. It’s amazing how something so simple can interrupt the flow of qi!
